Johnson County retailer found guilty of theft of sales tax

OLATHE – (January 31, 2020) – A Johnson County retailer has been found guilty of theft of sales tax, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said. David K. Miller, 45, of Olathe, pleaded no contest this week in Johnson County District Court to theft valuing greater than $1,000 but less than $25,000. The case stemmed from an investigation by the Office of Special Investigations of the Kansas Department of Revenue, which revealed that Miller, as the sole owner of Something Different Media Group, between June 2014 and August 2015 collected $21,286.46 in sales tax from customers in Johnson County and used those funds to pay for business and personal expenses instead of remitting the tax to the Department of Revenue.
